MKVToolNix is a collection of tools for the Matroska media container format by Moritz Bunkus including mkvmerge. The free and open source Matroska libraries and tools are available for various platforms including Linux and BSD distributions, macOS and Microsoft Windows. The tools can be also downloaded from video software distributors[4][5][6][7] and FOSS repositories.[8]
Applications[edit]
MKVToolNix was reviewed by the Linux Journal, Linux Format, the ICTE Journal, and Softpedia among others.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] The tools are cited in patents for a 'Universal container for audio data'.[16] A 'portable' Windows edition exists, but is not yet available in the PortableApps format.[17]
Components[edit]
For DVD-like named files both mkvmerge and the GUI will already detect those files and treat them as additional parts automatically. For most other cases in which you encounter movies split into multiple parts, the »append« functionality is what you want to use as all the files contain full sets of headers. Mkvmerge, mkvinfo, mkvpropedit, MKVToolNix GUI: added support for the following new track header elements: 'hearing impaired' flag, 'visual impaired' flag, 'text descriptions' flag, 'original' flag, 'commentary' flag. Implements #3011. MKVToolNix GUI: added support for using ISO 639-3 language codes in IETF BF47 language tags. However, mkvmerge, which is doing all the work, is fully scriptable via its command line. There are excellent shells out there with which you can automate pretty much all aspects of muxing. For example, with the bash or zsh shells you could convert all.avi files into Matroska with these commands. For DVD-like named files both mkvmerge and the GUI will already detect those files and treat them as additional parts automatically. Giovanni Scafora is maintaining packages for libEBML, libMatroska and MKVToolNix in Arch's extra repository. You can install MKVToolNix with the simple command pacman -S mkvtoolnix-cli mkvtoolnix-gui You can also view the package sites for libebml, libmatroska and MKVToolNix.
